Recognising Problem Gambling
Gambling becomes harmful when it begins to affect finances, relationships or mental health. The signs are not always obvious at first.
- Spending more than you can afford to lose
- Chasing losses by placing further bets
- Lying to family or friends about gambling activity
- Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling
- Feeling restless or irritable when trying to cut down
- Gambling to escape stress, anxiety or low mood
If any of these patterns apply to you or someone you know, seeking support early is advisable. Problem gambling is a recognised condition and help is available free of charge in the UK.
Self-Exclusion and Deposit Limit Tools
UK-licensed operators are required to offer players direct access to responsible gambling controls within their account settings. These tools are effective only when used alongside the national self-exclusion register.
GamStop
GamStop is the UK's national self-exclusion scheme. Registering at gamstop.co.uk excludes you from all UKGC-licensed gambling sites for a minimum of six months, one year, or five years. The exclusion takes effect within 24 hours and cannot be reversed before the chosen period ends.
Deposit Limits
All UK-licensed casinos must allow players to set daily, weekly or monthly deposit limits. Once a limit is lowered, the change takes effect immediately. Increases are subject to a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours under UKGC rules.
Time and Reality Checks
Session reminders and reality checks prompt players at set intervals during play. These can be configured in your account settings and are available at all UKGC-regulated sites.
Account Closure
If you want a break shorter than a formal self-exclusion, most operators offer a temporary account closure or cooling-off period of 24 hours up to several weeks. This differs from self-exclusion: you can reopen the account after the period expires.
